Steps to take after a motorcycle accident

Getting into an accident on the road can be scary and is something that many people keep in mind while they are driving. However, motorcycle drivers and riders may be extra wary of getting hit by other vehicles on the road. These riders lack the extra protection that cars have and are often in blind spots, leaving them susceptible to getting into an unwanted accident.

Motorcycle fatalities have been on the rise in Tennessee. 2016 resulted in close to 150 casualties. The national amount is much higher, which is why it is important to know what to do if or when you get into an accident while riding your motorcycle.

Assess yourself

Because you are much less protected than the car-driving counterpart in an accident, you are more prone to serious injury. If you are conscious after a crash, check yourself, and your passenger if you had one, for injuries. If you are seriously injured call for medical attention immediately. Your priority should be safety.

Move out of traffic

If you are in a populated road or highway, do your best to get your bike out of the way of oncoming traffic. The last thing you want is to be struck again by a car who is not able to stop for the accident.

Take photographs

Taking photos of both the damage to your motorcycle as well as yourself can help with insurance claims and proving liability down the road.

Call the police

Depending on the severity of the accident, it can be beneficial to call the police after an accident. They will assess what happened and talk to both you and the other driver. The officer(s) will likely file a police report, which you can access if you need help proving the other driver's liability.

Exchange information

It is wise to get the other driver's information. This includes name, phone number and insurance information. If there were any witnesses to the crash, it will be beneficial to get their information as well. This way, you have all the information you need.
